Segovia, Spain

What an amazing day of rich history in Segovia, starting from the 1st century AD and the Romans building a gigantic aqueduct, to the extraordinary Cathedral of Nuestra Senora de la Asuncion and of San Fruitos @ 1525, and mid-evil castle used by earlier Spanish monarchs and Spanish King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella in Columbus' time.  All this by high speed train that rode water smooth and dead quiet at 200+ mph, and then miles of walking on cobble stone streets in 100+ temperatures.  Redding trained me well for the heat!

This ancient city of Segovia was extraordinary in every way, in size, elegance, location and quality of craftsmanship.  The Alcazar Castle, built on the remains of a Roman fortress, is perched high on a plateau that made it defensible and allowed it to withstand the many sieges of its time. 

It was so far down from the castle walls that I got vertigo leaning over to look down.  It is easy to see why it is still intact.  Defense is key!

Finally in Madrid!

This is of course my first day, but my first impression of Madrid is that it is an amazing city where people take time to socialize with their families and friends. The pace is relaxed and casual in the evenings, where people dine outside, then stroll the streets, squares and walkways savoring their warm summer nights and their families and friends companionship.  Children play and have fun with their families late in the night. People are not embarased to be with their families, but rather proud, joyus and playful with them. True family values that aren't lip service, but actually show in their social behavior.  This is a great cultural adventure!

Spain Beats Germany, Advancing to the Final!

What an amazing development in World Cup football today as Spain defeated Germany in the semi-finals and advances to the final on July 11, 2010! It was an amazing defensive game with a final score 1-0. This is an amazing development on the eve of my trip!

Spain Trip Prep 2010

Well, I've done it. In my spare time from bungling the Spanish language, packing, exchanging currencies, and doing camera and technology prep, I've set up a blog for Spain. After seeing the well photographed, exciting, witty and eloquent South Africa blog created by Kathleen and Kas, I am a little intimidated. I have no mascot, or particular event to focus on, but it will be a rambling, unscripted journey that will unfold in front of me as I travel. Kind of Zen and the art of improvised traveling in Espana. I write this the day before I'm leaving, excited about what adventure lays ahead.
